In this project, I will shoot some photos about building and and some flat, I hope i can find out what are we facing about housing and what are happening in the society.
An information from Demogaphia, it shows that the first ten country which are difficult afford to buy a flat. Hong Kong is no.1, we need to not eat or drink for nineteen years before we can afford it.

This is some advertising leaflet about flat sale, around eight leaflets are selling the price more than 10 million, other around six million to eight million, only two flats are selling three million to five million. For our generation, buying a flat by ourself is an out of reach.

Nowadays, many young people who have just come out from the society are inseparable from the housing problem when they meet with their peers. They can not cope with the high floor. Apart from young people, some of the grassroots of the community cannot afford the exorbitant rent, which leads to the problem of subdivided unit. Subdivided flats form a miserable, known, but ignored world of Hong Kong housing: hidden from public view, under-regulated and, too often, unsafe. For some lower-income people, the rent of subdivided flats is getting hard to pay.  Though the total rent of a unit in a partitioned flat is between $2,000 and $4,000.  The rent per feet is comparable to those of luxurious flats.

Many people just want to have a home: a place they can afford to live.

What are we facing?

My project topic is Hong Kong housing problem.
The type of project is Photo Media.
In Hong Kong, the grassroots housing problem is very grim. US property consultant Demographia on January 25 released the latest survey about the affordable level of housing.

Hong Kong was the sixth consecutive years named the hardest burden on city property. Median property prices in Hong Kong in the third quarter of last year, the median annual household income is 19 times, equivalent to eat or drink for 19 years to complete the payment.

Although the rise in property prices reflect the economic boom, but also brought many social problems, such as difficulties in young home buyers, the rent burden is heavy, rising social discontent, hatred of the rich emotions increase, resulting in a growing number of social movements, serious undermine the stability of the SAR Government.

Housing problem directly involved quality of life for citizens, I would like to explore what are citizens facing about Hong Kong housing.

Blog 10 – Viewing final revision

A pre-screening of the short film was done with a few willing participants to ensure quality and standard of the film as well as identify any problems that may have slipped by. As it was the second part of a 2-part film it was not surprising when there were certain scenes or actions the main character did that confused the viewers who had not seen the previous film. In spite of that the viewers still found the film generally interesting and enjoyed without any need for any exposition or background knowledge of the characters. However multiple angles could have enhanced the presentation of the scenes.

There was a bit of confusion in the space ship scene as my viewers were familiar wit the shooting location and it gave them a predisposition of the location and stopped them from realizing my intentions of transforming the scene.

Posiitive feedback have been received on the clear concept of the film and the use of the animation along with the audio effect.

Blog 9 – Post production editing

The software used to edit the film was Adobe Premiere Pro. There was a brief attempt to use Affect Effects in hope that it would create better cinema grade like quality however, due to the unfamiliarity of the program and time constraints to learn how to use the program, it was decided against using it in the end. The most time-consuming part of the editing process was my attempt at rotoscoping in the scene where the main character looks out of a window and sees space. Though it is quite a short clip, going through each individual frame in order to adjust the masking was challenging.

Also, being the sequel to a previous film has also given extra importance on the continuity. Some graphical elements were reused from the prequel to show consistency between the two short films.

Another drawback faced was the extreme difference in lighting between the well-lit tunnel and the park at night. And to counter this problem, the colour correction on Adobe premiere pro for the bright scenes while the lighting adjustment effect was used for scenes that were too dark.

Blog 8 – Animation

Due to time constraints, I had once and to keep the consistency of the film, I had once again acquired the help of the animator from my previous film and as previously done given a script and storyboard as well as monitor the progress and direction of the animation but largely left the style and animating to the animator.

At the beginning, I had wanted traditional frame by frame animation drawn by hand on paper then scanned onto the computer as I believed it to be of higher quality than when drawn with the help of programs such as photoshop or illustrator. However, this proved to be extremely time consuming and had ask the animator to switch to digitally assisted drawing, using the Intuos Wacom and Adobe Photoshop to save time as I was worried that there would not be enough time to edit it into the final video and align it with the audio.

This is my last blog for this intensive production project, I am satisfied with this photo media project in both the working process and the outcome. As I am a fashion lover, working on a fashion related topic, luxury brands shopping window, was very interesting and enjoyable in the whole project no matter in preparation and photo taking progress. Also, my part time work experience and shopping experience in fashion industry has helped me alot in this project on location selection and researches.

There were some technical and environmental difficulties, such as light reflection problem and day and night time selection, but these problems were solved and being avoided after the first two photo shoots, this project has helped me to upgrade my photo producing skills and mind on how to plan the image structure. Overall, it was an interesting production project and I enjoyed it.
